Since its foundation in 1993, the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) has developed gradually to become a visible and significant institution for Arctic Studies in the natural sciences, now attracting about 500 students from around 30 countries annually.

A new study on schemes for Centres of Excellence (CoE) finds a broad set of impacts on the awarded research groups, as well as local impacts on their host institutions. They study includes 12 CoEs in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

Norway has the highest number of young, fast-growing companies in the Nordic countries. Norway also have the highest proportion of startup companies. However, Norway as a whole has the poorest conditions for entrepreneurship in the region. This results from the survey Nordic Growth Entrepreneurship Review as seen on growth in employment among Nordic companies in the three-year period 2007-2009.
