Literature review: The impact of mergers in higher education on micro-level processes

Against the backdrop of an increased focus on mergers in higher education, a new article systematically reviews research articles, providing implications for research and practice.

Sabine Wollscheid & Trude Røsdal grouped 21 studies from different countries under four themes: academic identity and self-image; cultural integration; staff reaction and teaching and research. The findings suggest that timing of the merger, status of institutions and disciplinary cultures has an impact on post-merger processes.

For further research, longitudinal studies might investigate changes from different angles and for different staff groups and students, exploring country differences and applying a comparative design.
